Nigerian athletes at Tokyo 2020 received enough clothing from AFA Sports Ministry
The Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development claimed that the athletes of the Tokyo 2020 Games “received sufficient specific clothing from AFA Sports”.
The ministry made the statement in a statement signed by Dr. Simon Ebohjaiye.
According to the statement: “The Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development (FMYSD) was drawn to the errors and inaccurate stories peddled in the media space about Nigeria’s team kits at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. and would like to make the following important details:
“Firstly, regarding the kits or sports equipment for the Nigeria team, there are two (2) categories: these are the General Wears and the Competition Wears.
“The General Wears category is the responsibility of the ministry. The outfitting of the Nigeria team for various national, continental and international sporting events has always been the responsibility of the ministry and it was no different for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. For the record, the Nigeria team was correctly equipped for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, the ministry procuring a bag of kits of 9 items for each of our athletes and officials.
“The second category of kits is competition clothing. This category corresponds to specific competition kits which are specific to each sport and provided by each sports federation.
“The ministry provides financial support to each sports federation as needed. It is therefore the responsibility of each national sports federation to provide these competition clothing to its athletes and team officials.
“For the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, each of the sports federations has procured competition clothing for its respective teams, according to their specific needs. AFN has obtained sufficient specific clothing from AFA Sports directly for its athletes at the Games.
In addition, in providing general clothing for the Nigeria team, the ministry relied on the federal government’s local content policy to seek to hire an indigenous company, AFA Sports, to produce the general kits.
The Nigerian team appeared at the Tokyo Olympics with the national colors. However, there have been controversies in light of recent events.
It will be recalled that in a letter dated Wednesday August 4, 2021 and signed by the director of the company Manuel Edlheimb, PUMA indicated that it was officially notifying the Athletics Federation of Nigeria of its termination of the sponsorship and licensing agreement. .
Another controversy arose from a Tiktok video made by Nigerian shot putter, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, who said he only had one jersey to use at the Olympics. This was greeted with public disapproval.
