LASU VC nomination crisis: the Lagos assembly intervenes
Lagos State Assembly Speaker Mudasiru Obasa said there was more to know about what the public knows about the crisis shaking the Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, on the appointment of the institution’s 9th titular vice-chancellor.
Obasa, who spoke in plenary on Tuesday, denounced the protracted controversies surrounding the appointment of another helmsman for the university, saying development is already slowing the university.
A statement released by the president’s spokesman Eromosele Ebhomele said the president called on the governor to deal quickly with the issue while instructing the parliamentary education committee to unravel the mystery surrounding the development.
He said: “We recently praised LASU for its achievements solely on the issue of succession in order to roll back the institution.
“They have regulations on how a VC should be selected. They did a test for those shortlisted for the office and their grades were very close to each other. They should have selected one of the shortlisted candidates. If you can’t choose which one came first, you have to choose number two or number three up to number five.
“I believe there is more to what is happening in the institution despite what we are seeing.”
Mr. Obasa was responding to the issue following an issue of urgent public importance raised by House Leader Sanai Agunbiade.
Mr. Agunbiade had complained that LASU was in crisis over the selection of a new VC.
No more complaints
While raising the issue, Mr Agunbiade said that a committee was set up towards the end of the term of the university’s 8th vice-chancellor, Olanrewaju Fagbohun, but the committee was dissolved due to written petitions. against the process.
He said another committee had been set up, but allegations of flawed processes and biased positions against some candidates had been raised by other stakeholders, saying the second process had also been put on hold.
He said; “Now LASU does not have a VC or a board of directors. LASU has gone from number two in the country to number five. Something urgently needs to be done regarding the selection of a new VC for the university.
“The home education committee should be asked to initiate an investigation into LASU’s issues and make recommendations.
“The governor should also look into the issues surrounding the selection of a vice-chancellor for the institution.”
Likewise, in his contribution, a member representing the constituency of Kosofe State 1, Ganiu Sanni, said that the issue of LASU was taking on a worrying dimension despite its achievements over the years.
Another lawmaker, Desmond Elliot, representing the Surulere 1 state constituency, noted that more than 50% of lawmakers in the assembly were LASU graduates.
Mr Elliot said LASU had become a pride of the state and the praise kept growing before the last problem arose.
He then called for a smooth transition in university administration.

Eti Osa 2 state constituency member Gbolahan Yishawu supported his colleagues’ position and called for an end to the crisis in the university to avoid damaging consequences.
The house therefore mandated its higher education commission to investigate the circumstances that led to the crisis and make appropriate recommendations.
The committee, which is chaired by the member representing Lagos Mainland 1 State Constituency Ajani Owolabi, is due to report to the plenary within a week.
The speaker, while giving the committee its mandate, said that the process of selecting vice-chancellors has always been a problem in the institution.
