ITV has commissioned a four-part adaptation based on Graham Norton’s funny and lovingly insightful debut novel, Holding, which will be filmed on location in Ireland.
Holding will be headed by Kathy Burke, written by Dominic Treadwell-Collins and Karen Cogan and produced by Happy Prince, which is part of ITV Studios, and Martina Niland for Port Pictures, in association with Screen Ireland.
Award-winning Olivier actor Conleth Hill (Game of Thrones, Dublin Murders, Vienna Blood) will take on the lead role of local cop Sergeant PJ Collins, a gentle mountain of man, who hides from people and fills his days comfort food. and half-hearted police work.
When the body of long-lost local legend Tommy Burke is discovered, PJ is called upon to solve a serious crime for the first time in his career. PJ must finally connect with the village he tried to avoid.
Graham Norton commented:
“I am more than happy to see the story and the characters I have created being brought to the screen. I love how the brilliant creative team turned my novel into something so rich and dramatic. West Cork is ready for her close-up !! “
Set in the fictional island village of Duneen, West Cork, on the edge of Ireland, a place with its own unique climate and rhythms, Holding will be led by award-winning actor, director and producer Kathy Burke.
Kathy Burke commented:
“2021 is my 40th year in the industry and I can’t think of a better way to celebrate than to run Holding. It’s a beautiful piece of writing with a great story and fantastic, full-bodied characters. All this with beautiful West Cork as an irresistible setting. “
A tale of love, secrets, and loss, Holding, is a dark, comedic tale that skillfully observes the lives of its characters, each with frailties, complexities, and pasts they prefer to keep hidden. The story is a murder mystery mixed with dark comedy and centered on the details of Irish rural life.
Conleth Hill commented:
“I look forward to working with Kathy, cast and crew, Dominic and everyone at Happy Prince to bring Graham’s brilliant characters and story to the screen.
Polly Hill, theater manager at ITV, has commissioned the series for the channel and will oversee production from a broadcaster’s perspective.
Polly Hill commented:
“Graham’s wonderful book was brilliantly brought to life by Dom and Karen. Conleth Hill is the perfect PJ, in what is a funny, well-observed take on life in a small, rural Irish community. It is a testament to the strength of these scripts that Kathy Burke is making and it will be exciting to see her bring this adaptation to the screen.
Holding will be adapted from Graham Norton’s debut novel, Holding, by Dominic Treadwell-Collins and Karen Cogan for Dominic’s ITV Studios, Happy Prince. It will be produced by Martina Niland (Once, Sing Street) for Port Pictures.
Dominic Treadwell-Collins commented:
“It’s so exciting to be able to bring Graham’s beautiful novel to the screen with the creative powers of Kathy Burke and Karen Cogan, with the brilliant Martina Niland producing. Writing my first screenplays alongside Karen and filming with Conleth and such a talented Irish crew and crew in West Cork – where my dad was and my family still are – makes it even more special.
Karen Cogan commented:
“The nuance and heart captured by Graham in Holding really appealed to me and it was a pleasure to dive into the lives of these characters to bring them to the screen. Working with the wonderful Dominic Treadwell-Collins and Kathy Burke is joyful; and as a cork woman, it’s especially nice to come home to shoot with the cast and the irish crew and this powerful crew.
Holding will be filmed in Ireland in the summer of 2021 and further casting details will be released closer to the start of production.
Holding is associated and distributed internationally by ITV Studios.
