EWU Board of Directors votes to remain a Division 1 sports university
CHENEY, Washington –The Eastern Washington University board of directors voted on Friday to remain a Division 1 athletic college.
There was only one no vote, which came from a student administrator, who said staying in the current division was too expensive.
The council ended up siding on the side Acting President David May, who recommended that the university remain in Division 1. May also said going down would be detrimental to the university’s mission and hurt the diversity of the student body.
The council’s decision comes after the university commissioned a report from the Pictor Group to help determine the best direction for the sports department. The six-month review highlighted issues with “declining enrollment and budget cuts”, but also noted that athletics was a way to boost the reputation of the university.
The report presented four options for the sports department to consider: remain a D1 team, upgrade to D1 (non-football) subdivision, upgrade to D2, or upgrade to D3.
Friday’s decision means the EWU will remain in the Big Sky conference.
