Election in Canada: TCDSB administrators vote against allowing polling stations in schools – Toronto
Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) administrators voted against allowing school polling stations for Canadian federal elections.
A spokesperson for the TCDSB said the board voted 6-5 not to allow polling stations at board schools “to eliminate any additional risk of COVID-19.”
The resolution says that the director of TCDSB will now write a letter to Elections Canada to notify the agency of the vote.
The resolution suggests that commercial buildings, arenas and public municipal buildings may instead be among the locations used as polling stations.
“For this advice, now allowing unidentified people into our indoor school facilities would pose more risk to our system, especially with the onset and prevalence of fatal variants,” the resolution reads in part.
While schools have traditionally been used as polling stations in the past, this is not a regular school year given the ongoing pandemic and the steps taken to try to keep the facilities open, the resolution says.
