5th Annual Union Savings Bank Library and Book Drive Yields Big Results with Community

As part of its 5th annual “Share the Love of Reading” book drive, Union Savings Bank recently collected over 2,000 new and gently used children’s books from customers and staff. The books are now available for the public to pick up and keep at 28 USB branches and offices through the new Share the Love of Reading USB Libraries.

Union Savings Bank established the Share the Love of Reading and Book Drive program in 2016 to further its commitment to education and help with reading programs for children. Distributing these books through the bank’s initiatives will help promote reading, encourage children’s literacy and is a way for children to explore their own love of reading.

“Children who have access to books and start reading at a young age become confident readers, preparing them for success in school and in their future,” said Cynthia C. Merkle, president and CEO of management of the Union Savings Bank. “Our Share the Love of Reading initiative has grown steadily over the past five years and we are very proud to be able to put more books into the hands of children in our community to encourage a love of reading. This year, we’ve expanded the program to include USB Share the Love of Reading Libraries, so more of our team members can share the excitement and engage directly with our customers, many of whom bring their children to our branches.

The Share the Love of Reading USB Libraries, which were assembled and decorated by bank employees, each have a unique theme and can be found at all USB branches and select bank offices. They have even been registered with LittleFreeLibrary.org as official libraries.

Merkle added, “One difference with our libraries is that the books don’t need to be returned; children are encouraged to pick up a book, read it and pass it on. Plus, as in the past, we’re also donating books to community partners throughout our market area, including schools, daycares, women’s shelters, and various nonprofits, to reach even more children.
